High-speed technology, machining of workpieces of all types and sizes, nearly 100% in-house developments, innovation, hidden champion. Attributes that suit many of our customers, but particularly Pressol. In the spring, our client approached us with a very special challenge: milling, drilling and other processes inside one of their most innovative machines that they wanted to be staged as interestingly as possible on film. We suggested working with a state-of-the-art high-speed camera.

High-speed shots are not uncommon. But what you hardly ever see are camera movements during these kinds of shots. No wonder, because getting a camera travelling platform into a machine is an extremely complex challenge. On top of that, using a camera of the required dimensions and at the same time ensuring that the expensive and sensitive camera will survive the machining process makes the whole endeavour a really tough nut to crack.

We customised various parts of the camera platform (travelling platform) for our shots at Pressol. We were massively supported by the innovative personnel at Pressol, who made their own rails and specially adapted their machine for us. This enabled us to create spectacular shots of various milling and other work processes. Bespoke plexiglass panes protected our cameras from abrasion, metal chips and dust. Magnetically attached diffuse light sources throughout the interior of the machine set lighting accents.

The ambient light came from several film light sources positioned directly in front of the machine’s protective screen. High-speed shots are extremely light-hungry due to the exceptionally high frame rate. The Isle of Light team brilliantly mastered what seemed to be an impossibility at the beginning.

The result is a high-speed documentary for technology fans that is well worth watching. The experience we have gained is valuable expertise that we will certainly continue to put to good use in the future.
